Sweeter than a Bourbon Street Hand Grenade for bettors who had confidence in Joe Burrow and Co. before the season started.

Not only was Burrow listed around +2500 to win the Heisman Trophy, but the Bayou Bengals were +3000 to win the 2020 National Championship entering the season. That’s a strong payout for LSU backers coming off a 15-0 season and dominant showing with wins over Oklahoma and Clemson in the College Football Playoff. We’re sure anyone who placed such a bet celebrated hard in the aftermath.

While the booze is still settling, it’s a good time for those who love college football betting to think about things like value and how the obvious choices – Clemson was +240 to win it all, Alabama was +250 – aren’t always the right ones. Especially coming off a year like that.

We want that that LSU-like feeling of satisfaction, identifying the top horse in the race before anyone else. Let’s take a look at some of the longer 2021 National Championship futures betting odds and pick the next LSU.

Bet the Texas Longhorns to Win 2021 CFP Title

Already we see one team on the list with a few similarities to the Tigers entering the 2019 season. This squad is bringing on a new offensive play-caller, like LSU did with the addition of passing game coordinator Joe Brady. There’s a trusted returning starter with untapped potential at quarterback. And there’s a sense of urgency as a big-time historical power that hasn’t won big in far too long.

That’s right, we like the Texas Longhorns at +3000 odds with potential to become the next LSU once the 2020 season kicks off.

The Longhorns just brought in former Ohio State passing game coordinator and quarterbacks coach Mike Yurcich, who helped construct the nation’s No. 4-ranked offense with Heisman contender Justin Fields. It’s clear to anyone who watched the 2019-20 CFP that elite defense doesn’t cut it anymore. Offense wins championships now. Great defense is a bonus. Yurcich also led an Oklahoma State offense that averaged 38 points and 478.3 yards from 2013-18. Bringing Yurcich on board shows coach Tom Herman understands he’s running out of time and patience in Austin.

More Texas-LSU Similarities

Could Texas QB Sam Ehlinger be next season’s Joe Burrow as well?
Could Texas QB Sam Ehlinger be next season’s Joe Burrow as well?

Texas finished 14th in total offense this season and is set to return seven starters, including quarterback Sam Ehlinger. The senior-to-be threw for 3,663 passing yards and 32 touchdowns with 10 interceptions in leading the Longhorns to an 8-5 record. Not exactly an all-star season, but remember that Burrow only passed for 2,894 yards and 16 touchdowns as a junior. Ehlinger has as good a chance as anyone to take a Burrow-sized leap in 2020.

The Longhorns defense needs to improve, for sure, but it doesn’t need to be a top-5 unit. LSU was 41st in total defense and came up with a few big, timely stops throughout the year. The offense took care of everything else.

Texas also travels to Baton Rouge Sept. 12 for an early shot at the defending champs. A loss won’t ruin the Longhorns’ CFP hopes and an upset win would be huge for the confidence. LSU’s 45-38 upset win over Texas on Sept. 7 sparked the Bayou Bengals on the eventual title run. Now the Longhorns have a chance to do the same in 2020 and return the favor.

We already know they can score with just about every team in the country. Maybe they can follow in LSU’s footsteps and shock the college football world come 2021.
