It’s tempting to go with Templeross after his fine second in the Lanzarote (2m5f) last time, the form of which is working out well – the third and fifth, Lord Of The Island and Kalondra respectively, have won decent handicaps since. However, Jamie Bargary got off him at Kempton and said he’d done well to finish as close as he did as he needed 3m ideally, so the drop back to 2m3f might just find him out. He’s plenty short enough at 9/2 besides.

Several of his rivals would appreciate better ground and they include Krugermac and My Khaleesi, while a few others are returning after long absences and are probably using this as a prep for bigger targets in the spring. In particular, keep an eye out for Stayers’ Hurdle entry Ordo Ab Chao, who also has the Coral Cup as an option, and Nicky Henderson’s Oscar Hoof, a faller when attempting a hat-trick in a Grade 1 novices’ hurdle almost three years ago and not sighted since.

But you’ll be wanting the winner of this race and I’m coming down in favour of another Henderson inmate in DIVINE SPEAR, who can be backed at a tasty 11/1 with Coral. He’s a massive horse and a two-mile chaser waiting to happen, but he is not a bad hurdler by any means and looked ready for a step up in trip when finishing a rallying third in a class 2 handicap over 2m1f on Cheltenham Trials Day. He can run of the same mark here and also benefits from the 5lb claim of his regular pilot Ned Curtis, who steered him to victory at Fontwell two starts back and makes the most of his opportunities for stable – three winners from 18 rides with 11 others finishing in the first four. The stable won last year’s renewal with Different Gravey.
