Invincible Army is officially the best horse in the Group 3 Pavilion Stakes over 6f and it’s hard to argue with that as he did really well last year, winning the Sirenia Stakes at Kempton and finishing second in the Molecomb, the Gimcrack and Mill Reef. However, his trainer James Tate reports him to have grown over the winter, describing him in a recent Stable Tour as “absolutely massive”, and in that case he might need a run or two to reach peak fitness for his big target, the Commonwealth Cup at Royal Ascot.

He’s therefore swerved at just 7/4 and with the next two in the betting, Sound And Silence and Laugh A Minute, also returning after winter breaks, I’m happy to take a chance on the Dean Ivory-trained filly EIRENE at a very backable 8/1. That looks a shade big given her eye-catching juvenile form, particularly a Listed win at Newbury on soft ground and a neck second behind Free Handicap winner Anna Nerium in a Group 3 at Salisbury, before a creditable sixth in the Cheveley Park on her final start at two.

She’s clearly trained on too judging by her reappearance third in the Nell Gwyn, in which she might have finished second but for stumbling a couple of times and then hanging under pressure. Her trainer was inclined to blame the undulating track and was sounding very hopeful in a Stable Tour last week that she was in for a big season, with the French Guineas being mentioned. While that may be a tad ambitious, she must have a decent squeak in this with the benefit of a run and getting weight from the boys.
