In this clash between Asian and World Cup champions, the odds certainly seem stacked against Australia, who will test their mettle in a tussle with European juggernauts Germany.

The Socceroos are outsiders at 14/1 with SkyBet to down Die Mannschaft in this prestige friendly, but do boast several ace cards up their sleeve, as they travel from the southern hemisphere to Kaiserslauten Stadium.

Not even Lionel Messi and co could slow Joachim Low’s men, but the new generation of swashbuckling Socceroos starlets will fancy their chances.

It may be unfortunate that talisman Tim Cahill is ruled out, but this could be to the benefit of crafty coach Ange Postecoglou, who can throw his fledglings into the fray.

The pick of the Socceroos’ new wave is Swindon Town star Massimo Luongo, who is priced at 14/1 with Coral to poach a goal anytime. Luongo, who manned Australia’s engine room during the Asian Cup, where he was crowned best player, is a bundle of energy and attacking intent.

A dynamic, driving force, Luongo was on target first for his nation in the Asian Cup final, and is 25/1 with William Hill to lead the charge and grab the opener again.

James Troisi, who, at 26, is now a senior member of the Socceroos squad, is also just beginning to come into his own for his country. After hitting both the curtain raising goal in Australia 2015 and then the winner to help his nation capture the cup up on home turf, tenacious Troisi is 25/1 with Bet365 to net last.

Mathew Leckie, a 6/1 punt with SkyBet to grab a goal anytime, is based in Bundesliga 2 with Bavarian team Ingolstadt. So, the flexible forward should relish playing a role on familiar soil, and must turn his attention from club to country after grabbing five goals and six assists this campaign.

Young West Sydney Warriors striker Tomi Juric, meanwhile, is 11/2 in the same market also with SkyBet to show off on European soil, after waiting patiently in line for his chance to shine.

If Australia can impress against their superstar hosts, perhaps canny Cahill may find it a tougher task to reclaim his spot in the Socceroos’ starting XI.
