The 2m novices’ hurdle (due off 3.00pm) looks quite competitive with a couple of penalised winners in Great Hall and New Street up against some interesting hurdle newcomers, including bumper winners Two Taff’s and Dashing Oscar, trained by Dan Skelton and Harry Fry respectively. The Alan King runner Precision Five also needs considering after a promising debut third at Newton Abbot.

It will take some winning and the market should prove a good guide, but I’m definitely leaning towards NEW STREET at this stage. He was a decent ten-furlong horse on the flat and signed off under that code with a victory at Haydock in June 2014 off a mark of 79, when trained by Richard Fahey. Now with Jim Best, he won at the first time of asking over hurdles at Stratford in March when beating a decent sort in El Beau under today’s pilot Daryl Jacob.

Connections said post race that they were considering running him next in the valuable four-year-old hurdle at Aintree and, while he didn’t make that gig for a reason unknown, he’s clearly well regarded. It’s interesting to note that he had entries in a couple of races at Wetherby on Saturday, one being a valuable handicap hurdle, so they’re presumably come here instead hoping for easier pickings and his experience will stand him in good stead.
