Belgium could actually be out on their backsides should they lose Saturday afternoon’s clash against the Republic, with the Red Devils having lost their opener against Italy.

Marc Wilmots struggled to get a performance from his team of talented players and their battling qualities will be tested on Saturday against a Republic of Ireland who won’t be fazed by coming up against Eden Hazard or Kevin de Bruyne.

Wilmots was critical of several players after that 2-0 reverse at the hands of Italy, with Belgium struggling to create many chances of note and they were effectively sucker-punched by the Azzurri.

They will now have to roll their sleeves up against an Ireland side who will be ready for another scrap and were the better team against Sweden in their opener before drawing the game 1-1.

Martin O’Neill’s side were full of energy and intent, with Wes Hoolahan scoring a peach before the Swedes were able to land a point that they scarcely deserved.

John O’Shea and Ciaran Clark make for a combative central defensive pairing, with Robbie Brady and Seamus Coleman full of running in the full-back positions, although Jon Walters is unlikely to play another minute due to injury.

However, there isn’t as much between these teams as the odds suggest. The Republic thrive against these sort of opponents as they demonstrated when drawing 1-1 away to Germany before winning 1-0 in Dublin.

Something similar can happen against the Belgians, with Kevin de Bruyne expected to be contained and Eden Hazard was also quiet against Italy.
