Well this was a quarter final match-up that few were expecting. Instead of Ecuador or Mexico claiming second spot in Group A behind Chile, it was a Bolivian side who beat the former 3-2 to ensure they got over the line.

La Verde now have a decent chance of actually making the semis and Bolivian coach Mauricio Soria knows his team have little to lose from having a crack against a team who can hardly be described as world-beaters.

Both sides finished down the pecking order when it came to 2014 World Cup qualification and, although their world rankings are disparate, the two 1-1 score lines during that phase suggests they are fairly even-matched.

The manager opted to give minutes to Edemir Rodriguez, Cristian Coimbra, Pablo Escobar and Walter Veizaga at the expense of Edward Zenteno, Damian Lizio, Miguel Hurtado and Danny Bejarano for the 5-0 trouncing at the hands of Chile.

However, that key quartet will now return and a repeat of their 3-2 win over the Ecuadorians could be on the cards. They also held Mexico to a goalless draw so they merit more respect than their 3-1 quotes.

After all, the Peruvians might have ground out a goalless draw against Colombia and come close to a point against Brazil, although these were matches where they could play the role of underdog successfully. This match has them as favourites and it’s an unusual position for Los Incas.

It’s perfectly feasible that we might need extra-time and penalties to separate two sides who would have snapped your hand off for a semi-final spot at the beginning of the tournament, so let’s side with Bolivia on the handicap market.
