There’s a temptation to assume that Neil Warnock will wave a magic wand at Cardiff City and turn the Bluebirds from relegation contenders to promotion hopefuls.

However, the 67-year-old returns to a division that has never been more competitive. He might claim that money doesn’t win you promotion but the sides near the top of last season’s Championship were the ones with the biggest budgets.

Warnock inherits a Cardiff side who sit 23rd in the table after accruing eight points from eleven matches. The Welsh side have lost four of their five home encounters and the omens don’t look good for Friday’s clash.

Despite the 45 miles between the two clubs, Cardiff and Bristol City have a fairly hot rivalry and there will be plenty of visiting supporters crossing the M4 to cheer on a side who have been a surprise package thus far this term.

This time last year, Lee Johnson was struggling to get a tune out of Barnsley, although he turned things around at Oakwell before gaining a promotion to Ashton Gate and the young manager has moulded an exciting team who could be dark horses for a top six spot.

It always helps to have a prolific goalscorer in your team and Tammy Abraham has notched eight goals already in a City shirt, although the fact he’s on loan from Chelsea suggests that Bristol are only likely to enjoy his services for a year.

Nevertheless, the 19-year-old is flourishing under Johnson and the Robins sit fifth in the Championship table. They’re playing attacking football and won’t be too worried about Cardiff and their new manager on Friday.

Indeed, the visitors come into this game off the back of four straight victories, with City winning twice at Fulham before home wins against Leeds and Forest.

By comparison, Cardiff have managed to score just two goals at home this term and Warnock has recruited Marouane Chamakh and Junior Hoilett to help their scoring woes, although Rome wasn’t built in a day.
