David Pipe continues to churn out the winners, with a brace over the weekend, and he breaks new territory on Monday with IMPULSIVE AMERICAN being his first flat runner at Carlisle.

The three-year-old makes the 342-mile journey from Pipe’s Somerset base to contest the opening 1m3f handicap for apprentice riders (due off 5.05pm) and that has to be a tip in itself. As regards his form, we’re a little in the dark as he is making his British / stable debut here having had nine starts in France, finishing runner-up on the last two of those in maiden company.

That said, the Pipe’s are renowned for their exploits with ex-French horses and they are likely to have a very good idea of where they stand with this gelding, who has been given an initial mark of 64. That may prove very generous in time and it seems significant that connections are not using a claiming rider to reduce the horse’s burden, preferring instead to go with the relative experience of Shane Gray, who has struck up such a good partnership Kevin Ryan with Charlie Appleby this season.

The selection is well entered up later this week, with options at Bath, Wolverhampton and Ffos Las, and it would be no surprise to see him win this before being turned out again quickly. As today’s race is confined to apprentices, he won’t pick up a penalty if successful, a fact unlikely to be lost on the ultra-shrewd Pipe operation.
