There will be a heroes welcome for Frank Lampard on Wednesday night, with the Derby County manager rightly regarded as one of the best players to ever don a blue shirt for Chelsea Football Club.

Lampard was highly decorated during his playing career at Stamford Bridge and now gets the chance to sit in the opposition dug-out and try to conjure a way of claiming the scalp of Chelsea in the EFL Cup.

The good news is that Derby won’t be facing the strongest possible opposition, with Maurizio Sarri surely going to give some of his star players a rest and we might see Eden Hazard, Jorginho and Marcos Alonso among those sitting on the bench.

It doesn’t mean that the home side will be particularly weak and Sarri will hope for a professional performance that avoids a repeat of the previous round where Derby dumped Manchester United out of the competition.

The great news for the Rams is they have little to lose in this game. Lampard will send out a team packed with young exciting players although Mason Mount won’t be included after Chelsea denied him the chance as the parent club.

Harry Wilson has been exciting and the same can be said of Jack Marriott who recently scored the winning goal against Sheffield United and also took the game into penalties at Old Trafford when scoring.

We can see Derby getting on the front foot although this could be a Bridge too far for a side who are likely to be outscored by a team who won at Liverpool in the previous round.
