West Ham finished twelve points ahead of Chelsea in the Premier League last season and this was no fluke.

Slaven Bilic was not the first-choice to replace Sam Allardyce (it was Rafael Benitez) although the Croatian really did grab his opportunity with both hands and the Hammers finished in a credible seventh position.

With Dimitri Payet remaining with the East London club and new signings imminent, there is little reason why West Ham can’t continue to make progress under the straight-talking Bilic and we should note they scalped plenty of teams on the road last term.

The Hammers won at the Emirates in their opening game and followed that up with triumphs at Anfield and the Etihad. Indeed, they only lost five times all season on the road and have the attacking weaponry to cause more problems.

Chelsea start a new campaign with yet another new manager and Antonio Conte will look to build a squad capable of challenging for the Premier League title and other silverware.

The Jose Mourinho return was briefly successful before ending in player mutiny, although Conte will look to engender a new and bolder team spirit, harnessing the best from Eden Hazard and Cesc Fabregas amongst others.

Perhaps Conte will ultimately succeed, although it could take a little while and West Ham will fancy serving it up to their London rivals in this opener.
