A Momentofmadness is a speedy sort and is ideally drawn to attack in stall one, but he has not been missed by bookmakers – no bigger than 9/2 available at the time of writing – and I’ve a suspicion he is best going right-handed. He’s therefore passed over and a solid each-way alternative is Ian Williams’ SIR MAXIMILIAN, whose draw in stall eight is wider than ideal but has plenty going for him otherwise. Twice a winner over track and trip, including this race in 2014, he’s become exceptionally well handicapped following a largely unsuccessful spell at Meydan earlier this year, having dropped to a mark 16lb lower than his peak.

He’s also in Friday’s 5f handicap and has landed the plum draw in that (stall one), so I’ll suggest Powerallied as an alternative should he be switched. But make sure you have a bit on Sir Maximilian whichever race he runs in as I’m convinced he’s been laid out for this meeting.
