Magic Circle finished fifth in last year’s race from the widest draw of all and, now better berthed in stall six and making his first start for Ian Williams, he could improve on that. He’s still going to need some luck in running, mind, and especially as he’s normally held up, while he also lacks a prep run having been off for 209 days. That’s a big negative when you consider that seven of the last ten winners had run within two months and two of the last four were first and third in the 2m handicap run at Ripon at the end of April.

That race could again throw up the winner as the third, MY REWARD, has landed the plum draw in stall one and, given his front-running style, he might be difficult to peg back. That was the case when he won over 1m51/2f here in August of last year under a well judged ride by David Allan, who again takes the reigns. Now just 4lb higher, he should make a bold bid from the front and is each-way value at the 14/1 on offer at Paddy Power, who are paying out on five places.

However, I’ve a feeling something might come out the pack and do him close home and that horse might be Philip Kirby’s STARGAZER, who is looking a bargain for new connections having been with Sir Michael Stoute previously and changing hands for just £8,000. Beaten a neck on his stable debut at Newcastle in March, when showing his appreciation for the step up to 2m1/2f, he was first past the post on his return to that track, only to be demoted and placed second. That was harsh as he would have crossed the line more than a nose in front had he not run into a loose horse and while he’s gone up 4lb for that, he’s still unexposed at staying trips. From a good draw in stall four and having had a ‘perfect preparation’ according to his trainer, I fancy he can compensation here and give us a 7/1 payday.

Others worthy of a mention are Time To Study, who was second in the Group 3 Sagaro Stakes at Ascot last time, and Dubawi Fifty, an improving five-year-old and fourth in the Cesarewitch when last seen on turf. Neither are as well positioned as the selections, though, having drawn stalls seven and ten respectively, and the importance of the draw cannot be emphasised enough when you consider that seven of the last nine winners exited out of stall five or lower.
