Derby County supporters suspected that this would be a transitional season for their club and so it’s proving to be, with the Rams sitting fifteenth in the Championship table after amassing thirteen points from ten games.

There have been some bright performances including a 5-0 hammering of Hull City and a goalless draw at Cardiff, illustrating that Gary Rowett’s side can turn on the style and learn to grind out a result.

However, the plain fact is that Derby don’t have that winning feeling right now, having failed to win any of their past five matches and it’s hard to back them at the bookmaker odds of odds-on for Sunday’s derby against hated rivals Nottingham Forest.

The Tricky Trees make the short journey down the A52 sitting two points better off than their opponents, with Mark Warburton’s men ending a four-match losing run when beating high-flying Sheffield United a fortnight ago.

Forest have had some tough opponents recently including Fulham and Sheffield United, with David Vaughan likely to return to the team and the visitors certainly need him in the engine room where the match could be won or lost.

The big concern for Warburton is that Forest are conceding an average of two goals per away game, with a more defensive formation set to be employed against a Derby team who are lacking creativity.

Thomas Ince and Will Hughes were always going to be hard to replace and Tom Lawrence’s bright performance in a Welsh shirt suggests that he could be a match-winner in a game like this.

However, the Rams are short of home goals aside from that freak win over Hull and the net has bulged on just two occasions for County in matches against Wolves, Preston and Birmingham.

All things point to a cagey match and we’re happy to back the draw for this east Midlands tussle.
