A lot is being made of Thursday’s Group G clash between the two teams going through to the last sixteen of the World Cup.

Before the tournament, the focus would have been winning the section and having a potentially easier last sixteen clash, although things have changed since then.

Colombia’s defeat to Japan in the first game means that the dangerous Cafeteros might be lying in wait in the first knockout match, while the draw suggests that being a Group G runner-up gives you an easier shot of going deep.

That explains why Roberto Martinez is deciding to drop most of his first team for the clash against England, with booked players definitely ruled out. Kevin de Bruyne and Jan Vertonghen are among them.

Belgium clearly care little for winning this clash and it means that England will go through as Group G winners if they win or draw (unless they have more bookings than their opponents).

Gareth Southgate might just decide to enjoy a commanding win and there’s a chance that his team could face Japan or Senegal in the last sixteen which would be a positive situation despite the presence of Brazil or Germany in the last eight.

Harry Kane might be dropped but Marcus Rashford and Jamie Vardy are raring to go and Danny Welbeck might also enjoy some game time. Eric Dier, Gary Cahill and Phil Jones might also get outings.

England have looked good in this tournament and this inventive style of football means that we’re happy to back them for a victory to keep the confidence levels high.
