Gareth Southgate couldn’t have been handed an easier first match in temporary charge of England, with Malta arriving at Wembley this weekend and unlikely to cause too many problems for the Three Lions.

Southgate has selected a predictable squad for the two World Cup qualifiers against the Maltese and Slovenia, with Marcus Rashford promoted from the Under-21’s and the Manchester United forward should really be starting this game.

After all, Daniel Sturridge is merely a squad player for Liverpool this season and Jamie Vardy has been modest for Leicester this term, with Rashford capable of scoring a hat-trick against this sort of opposition.

Glen Johnson’s recall has raised an eyebrow but the Stoke defender will merely be an understudy to Kyle Walker in the right-back slot, with Wayne Rooney continuing to get a game for England due to nobody at international level letting him know he’s not good enough anymore.

This is a fantastic opportunity for the players to go out and express themselves at the national stadium against a Malta side who lost 5-1 at home to Scotland in their first World Cup qualifier.

They did actually hold the Scots in the first-half of the clash although the floodgates opened after the break. If Robert Snodgrass can manage a hat-trick against this sort of opposition, then Marcus Rashford should fill his boots.
