England will play Portugal just nine days before clashing with Russia at Euro 2016 on 11 June, with Roy Hodgson likely to select the team and formation that will be replicated in that Group B opener.

That means that a 4-2-3-1 formation is likely to be deployed, with Wayne Rooney one of the three attacking midfielders and it could be the case that the England captain will be flanked by Dele Alli and Adam Lallana.

Eric Dier and Jack Wilshere look likely to operate as defensive midfielders, with Harry Kane up top and hoping to sign off with a goal before leading the line against the Russians.

England have already beaten Turkey and Australia albeit in unconvincing circumstances, with the Portuguese unlikely to get anything at Wembley, especially when you consider that Cristiano Ronaldo will sit out the match.

In addition, Pepe will be given the night off and the visitors don’t start their Euro 2016 campaign until Tuesday 14 June so they have a little longer to prepare for the clash against Iceland.

Former Manchester United winger Nani is also unlikely to feature, with the 38-year-old Ricardo Carvalho looking to add to his 84 caps, while Joao Moutinho brings class and experience to the midfield department.

Portugal beat Norway 3-0 recently and will be stern opposition for England, although Hodgson will be looking to use this match as a dress rehearsal for the clash against Russia and we should expect an improved performance on the Australia game.

Jamie Vardy is now married and back in the squad, with the Leicester man chomping at the bit to get started, while Alli and Lallana should pose plenty of problems from out wide – unless Hodgson decides to go with the speedy Raheem Sterling instead.
