Ronald Koeman is keeping a cool head with regard to Everton’s prospects this season, although the Dutchman must secretly harbour aspirations of steering the Toffees into the Champions League.

It was a claim made by Roberto Martinez which came back to bite the Spaniard on the backside, although Koeman is far more reticent when discussing his teams and appears happy to go about his business quietly.

Even with Ross Barkley struggling, the Toffees were able to overcome a Sunderland side who began the game looking bright and well-drilled, with Romelu Lukaku’s return to scoring form taking place with a bang.

The Belgian is now getting match sharpness and will face a Middlesbrough side who have conceded in three of their four matches to date, with Aitor Karanka’s side losing at home to Crystal Palace last weekend.

Boro will approach this match with caution. A point would clearly be a good return from a trip to Goodison Park and it was the outcome on a recent visit to The Hawthorns although the truth is that the Teeside team offered little in terms of cutting-edge.

Most of this match is likely to see them defend like their lives depend on it, although the aerial capability of Lukaku will present a problem, especially if Yannick Bolasie and Gerard Deulofeu can get the right sort of delivery into the penalty area.

Player-for-player, Everton are a good deal better than their opposite numbers and two consecutive clean sheets means we’re happy to take a punt on the Merseyside team winning by a couple of goals.
