Gilmer ran a cracker over track and trip two starts back

A nice easy 12-runner handicap (Zaira doesn’t run) to finish on – not! At least we can put a tentative line through the bottom four as they have little to recommend them on recent form and are ‘wrong’ at the weights.

The top weights looks far more solid and it’s very hard to imagine Hickster not being involved at the finish. A winner at the track over a furlong further two starts back, he probably bumped into a a couple of better handicapped rivals when third over track and trip last time and the handicapper has kept him on the same mark. It’s Only Business has finished third on both his starts this term and should be able to win a race of this nature off his current perch of 60. Of the pair, the latter is just preferred at 11/2.

But it could be worth taking a chance on Laura Young’s GILMER at the current 16/1. That seems a tad too big based on his effort over track and trip two starts back when finding only Mr Chocolate Drop a neck too good off a 1lb lower mark. That was by his best effort to date and he may well have won had his rider Ryan While had not gone so hard from the front. The 5lb claimer is given another chance today and a subsequent dismal effort at Brighton can be readily excused as he clearly didn’t act on that idiosyncratic track. Any market support for him would be significant.
