Favourite backers tend to fare best in the months of July and August when the ground is fast and horses are at their peak fitness, resulting in more horses running to form and to market expectations. This has particularly proved to be the case in selling races, where the difference between horses with the highest and lowest ratings can be vast, and the best horse according to the ratings invariably wins.

That is a strong pointer to the chances of HILLGROVE ANGEL, the forecast favourite for this evening’s 1m2f seller at Windsor (6.30pm). The three-year-old is 0-13, but rarely runs a bad race and has finished in the first four on no less than eight occasions, including when third in a Brighton handicap last time, run over a similar trip and on identical ground.

His trainer David Evans is now dropping him into selling company for the first time to help him get that elusive win on the board, and he has found a good opportunity as he’s the top-rated horse on 67, which puts him nicely clear of the next highest rated horse Helmsman on 62, with Fridge Kid third highest on 60. The other three runners are rated 51 or less and would need to improve significantly to land a blow.

So, the selection is officially the best horse in the race, arrives here in good form and is proven over the trip and on the ground. He may be favourite as a result, but I’ll happily take another winner to ensure a perfect 2-2 start to the week, hopefully.
