The 2m handicap (due off 4.30pm) looks just as competitive but there must be every chance that Tim Easterby’s HOT SPICE can follow up his all-the-way Thirsk success of seven days ago under a 6lb penalty, despite this being a tougher race. The seven-year-old seems to thrive at this time of the year and was taking his late June/July form figures to 1111 when beating Dr Irv by two and a quarter lengths.

Interestingly, he beat the same horse over course and distance last July, making all on that occasion too, and that was following on from a previous Redcar win, showing he’s well capable of winning back-to-back races. His penalty means he runs off 74 this afternoon, just 2lb higher than when scoring here 12 months ago, and he should again prove hard to catch under Graham Gibbons (3-6 on the horse) from what looks a favourable draw in stall two.
