Middlesbrough continue to be one of the favourites for automatic promotion this season, although perhaps the Teeside club will be Championship bridesmaids yet again.

Aitor Karanka’s team can now focus on league matters after Tuesday’s reverse against Everton which illustrated that Boro still have improvement to find if they are to eventually compete at Premier League level.

Middlesbrough sit second in the table and look like they will be thrashing it out with Brighton, Derby, Hull and Burnley for the top two spots this term. However, while the team have enjoyed seven wins from nine games at the Riverside, they have been flimsier on the road.

Four wins, two draws and three defeats have occurred during nine road trips and a game at Portman Road is never an easy task, with Mick McCarthy’s side having lost just once at home all term.

The Tractor Boys sit just outside the play-off spots and they are six games unbeaten after a 3-0 win at Charlton, with Town enjoying a third clean sheet in five matches.

Daryl Murphy has now scored six goals in five matches after a barren spell for the first few months of the campaign, with the Republic of Ireland international looking to fill his boots again on Friday night.

They’ve had more preparation time than their opponents who will need to brush themselves down after that Everton reverse, with Boro having previously won five of their past six Championship clashes.

Nevertheless, there’s a nagging doubt that the Teeside club don’t have that prolific striker that could help them over the line and it’s worth opposing them when you consider they were recently beaten 3-0 at Hull.

The draw probably offers the best value and a low-scoring one at that.
