As is always the case in Classics, especially on this side of the Irish Sea, it’s Aidan O’Brien who is our first port of call and he is mob-handed here with four runners. The quartet are headed by Happily, the mount of Ryan Moore, and she certainly has the form in the book having won three Group races at two, including twice at the highest level, and shown she had trained on when a keeping-on third in the 1000 Guineas at Newmarket. She’ll surely come on for that run and although she got tapped for toe and gave the impression she would do better over further than a mile, she is a worthy favourite against what looks an easier field.

But current best odds of 6/4 do little to excite and I’d much rather have a little on Dermot Weld’s CHIARA LUNA, who can be backed each-way at 11/1 with Paddy Power. The winner of her only start at two, a Leopardstown maiden over 6f in August, when looking better the further they went to score a shade cosily, she was not seen again until reappearing at the same track in the Guineas trial won by the re-opposing Who’s Steph 14 days ago. While she could only finish fourth, she was only beaten two lengths, doing all her best work late on, and would have finished closer still had she got a clearer passage. Likely to improve a bundle for that outing and with this stiffer track sure to suit, this daughter of the stable’s Ribblesdale winner Princess Highway is taken to turn the tables on her recent conqueror and give Happily a run for her money.

O’Brien’s Clemmie is another to consider on the strength of her progressive profile at two, although winning a Classic is never easy first time out and there doesn’t appear to be a great deal of market confidence behind her. Jessica Harrington’s Alpha Centauri was very disappointing on her seasonal reappearance, but she is surely better than that and, with her stable in flying form, she could reward each-way backers at Ladbrokes’ 20/1.
