Wigan find themselves back in League One after finishing 23rd in the Championship last season, although the north-west club have wasted little time in hiring a manager to help steer them back to the second tier.

Paul Cook is expected to be confirmed at the DW Stadium this week, with the former Chesterfield manager having steered Portsmouth into League One last season and Wigan will now hope he can continue the good work with the Latics.

Wigan will clearly have one of the biggest budgets in the division next season and the fact that Cook chose to leave such a well-supported club like Pompey illustrates that the former have financial clout and ambition to be back in the Championship.

There are some talented players in the squad, including striker Omar Bogle who was tearing it up for Grimsby during the first half of last season, while Max Power and Michael Jacobs should also be class acts at this level.

While Wigan are a best price 9/1, Portsmouth are a similar price following their League Two title victory, with William Hill offering 9/1 that Pompey win the League One title and achieve a consecutive promotion. The Hampshire club have begun their search for a new manager after Cook’s departure.

At a much bigger price, it might also be worth backing Bury for the League One title, with the bookies failing to take notice of the fact that the Shakers have been very active in the transfer market this summer.

Jermaine Beckford was the headline signing after agreeing to make the move from Preston North End, although Callum Reilly, Stephen Dawson and Phil Edwards are other players to have arrived at Gigg Lane.

There’s a small element of doubt over manager Lee Clark who has previously failed with Huddersfield Town at this level, although perhaps the Geordie has improved after managing north of the border and he did well when taking charge last season.
