The Coates family did some quick soul-searching at the end of last season and then decided on a game plan.

It involved seeking out a quality manager in Gary Rowett who was happy to leave Derby County for the bet365 Stadium and the new boss has been armed with lots of cash to rebuild a squad.

Thomas Ince has recently arrived at the club from Huddersfield and was mustard during his time at Derby in the Championship, with Benik Afobe likely to be a lively striker at this level and Joe Allen having signed a long-term deal at the club.

However, there is no getting away from the fact that Rowett has been a pragmatic manager with Burton, Birmingham and Derby. Clearly being in charge of the Championship favourites might allow the manager to play a more expansive form of football but old habits die hard.

As for Leeds, we have the intriguing prospect of Marcelo Bielsa managing at Elland Road and this opening match of the season is likely to bring supporters out in their droves.

Lewis Baker has arrived on loan from Chelsea and we’re expecting one fairly high-profile striker to arrive at the club before the transfer window shuts.

Bielsa hasn’t hung around for long in his recent managerial posts, with stints at Lille and Lazio lasting a matter of months. Chairman Andrea Radrizzani is, however, clearly an astute businessman with a vision of what can be achieved.

Put simply, Stoke seem better equipped right now to enjoy promotion although this could be a tightly-fought clash with both sides landing a point to take into the next game.
