I’ve been tipping up far too many non-runners of late (five on Saturday due to going changes!) and the Lucy Wadham-trained PUMBLECHOOK was another source of frustration when getting scratched from a Windsor handicap yesterday.

Still, the three-year-old is not going to be idle for long as he’s been declared for the 1m3f handicap at Leicester this afternoon, which is perhaps the slightly easier option as he’s up against fellow three-year-olds.

There are some progressive types amongst them but the selection is also in that bracket and his form makes for interesting reading. Certainly his debut third behind subsequent Dante winner Wings Of Desire reads well and he had no trouble landing the odds in a Pontefract maiden on his next start. He could finish only fourth of the five runners when making his handicap debut at Doncaster when last seen out in July, but he was up against more experienced rivals and the second has done his bit to boost the form since.

Given his stout pedigree and the fact he resides in a dual purpose yard, it would be no surprise to see him out over hurdles before too long and he has the scope to make his mark in that sphere. But on racecourse evidence he ought to be up to winning on the level off his current mark and this is the first time he’s raced on an easier surface, which promises to suit. He’s got to be worth a small each-way interest.
