Liverpool suffered a rare defeat on Wednesday, with Napoli scoring a late winner against the Reds and opening up their Champions League group that also features PSG.

Jurgen Klopp can shelve that result but there’s a nagging feeling that he got his tactics wrong for the encounter and that’s not ideal ahead of a potentially decisive game against a Manchester City team who are gunning to go clear at the top of the table.

Pep Guardiola got things wrong twice at Anfield last season. After Man City thrashed Liverpool 5-0 in September, there was a 4-3 reverse against Liverpool which featured a devastating nineteen minute period that won’t be forgotten easily.

Then there was the 3-0 Champions League mauling, with City unable to recover from that first leg battering, with Pep now considering how to approach this match.

The Spaniard would dearly love to have Kevin de Bruyne back for the encounter, although the Belgian is still a fortnight away from being match ready, while Sergio Aguero appears to be nursing an ankle injury.

City would gladly take a point from this match. While three would steer them clear at the top ahead of the international break, there might be an element of pragmatism considering the way in which Liverpool are capable of counter-attacking.

Nevertheless, there could be a few goals scored and a 2-2 draw makes plenty of appeal.
