Jurgen Klopp described Liverpool’s pairing with Manchester United as a “cool tie” although the German will have been secretly ruing the fact that the Reds meet their arch-rivals at this stage of the competition.

Sure enough, it gives the Merseyside team a wonderful chance of getting through to the last eight and it’s a surprise to see Liverpool at even money against a Red Devils side who have been hit and miss under Louis van Gaal all season.

However, anything can happen when two teams from the same country meet in Europe and United have the edge this season with their Premier League wins at Old Trafford and Anfield.

Van Gaal will look to employ similar tactics in this game to the strategy at Anfield last time out where the Red Devils claimed a 1-0 win through Wayne Rooney who won’t be available for this particular clash.

That means a defensive approach looking to prevent Liverpool enjoying the sort of freedom that saw the Reds ride roughshod over Manchester City last week and enjoy a 3-0 scoreline.

In essence, both of these teams are not the finished article. Liverpool are more attack-minded although they also have defensive frailties and Klopp will not regard a goalless draw as the worst possible outcome considering that United without an away goal will be nervous in the second leg match.

We’re happy to go for a low goal count and can afford for one to be scored with our selection. If Liverpool get the goal, they will look to shut up shop and take that advantage into the next game as they did against Stoke in the Capital One Cup.

For United, a 1-0 advantage would be huge and give them a chance to stretch ahead so the scoring could stop after one goal if it gets that far.
