There were mitigating circumstances behind Liverpool’s 5-0 defeat at Manchester City on Saturday, most notably the fact that Sadio Mane was sent off with the game at 1-0.

The Senegalese winger will be suspended for the next three Premier League matches although he’s certain to start against Sevilla, with the Reds looking to carry on where they left off after beating Hoffenheim 6-3 on aggregate.

The 4-2 win over the German side at Anfield was particularly impressive although the concession of goals is a familiar story to a team who also shipped three at Watford on the opening day of the season and Jurgen Klopp hasn’t strengthened a defence that looked shaky last term.

Ultimately, Liverpool are too short against a Sevilla side who finished fourth in La Liga last season and somehow failed to find a way past Leicester City at the last sixteen stage of the Champions League last season.

Sevilla have opened with seven points from their opening three matches and overcame a lively İstanbul Başakşehir side in the play-off stage to reach the group phase.

The visitors will be happy to take a point from this encounter and have a couple of former Manchester City players in their ranks thanks to the signing of Jesus Navas and Nolito.

With Spartak Moscow and Maribor the other teams in this group, Liverpool and Sevilla won’t be too dismayed with a point in this match.
