Sunderland fans might have groaned when they saw the first fixture of the new season, although David Moyes fared well against Manchester City when he was Everton manager and will be looking forward to this Saturday evening challenge.

Sam Allardyce kept the Black Cats in the top flight against all the odds, with Moyes inheriting a group of players who know how to scrap away in the top flight and get positive results. He’s kept the nucleus of the squad together even if Lamine Kone’s move to Everton seems inevitable.

Moyes is no great respecter of reputation as he’s previously shown when locking horns with Rafael Benitez and Jose Mourinho. Now he’s pitted against Pep Guardiola and there will be no quarter given against this new-look Manchester City team.

Guardiola might end up being the best thing since sliced bread at the Etihad Stadium although Rome wasn’t build in a day and the arrival of new players means that a winning blend has to be created.

The Spaniard might have achieved good things with Barcelona and Bayern Munich although both were steering jobs where a quality squad was already inherited. The same doesn’t quite apply with Manchester City.

Yes, Guardiola has already started signing players in his own image, while the presence of Sergio Aguero, David Silva, Kevin de Bruyne and Vincent Kompany means that the building blocks are in place.

However, a hungry and hard-working Sunderland team in the first match of the season can earn a point or at least run their opponents close. It’s a free shot for the Black Cats and they might just take it.
