Jose Mourinho can talk all the bollocks he likes during pre-season although the bottom line is that the target is winning the 2017/18 Premier League title.

Forget talk of being a little horse or outsiders, you don’t go splashing £70 million on Romelu Lukaku without seriously intending to challenge for major honours, having previously broke the bank to land Paul Pogba the season before.

Last season, United finished sixth which would have drawn more scorn were it not for the fact that the Red Devils won the Europa League, thus gaining a backdoor entrance to the Champions League without so much as a play-off.

Part of the reason behind such a lowly finish was the sheer volume of drawn matches at home, with teams often able to thwart a United side who were over-reliant on Zlatan Ibrahimovic to score goals, while Anthony Martial and Henrikh Mkhitaryan simply didn’t come to the party.

Lukaku is now on board and the above pair are now back in favour, with Mourinho desperate to get the ball rolling with a solid win against West Ham. He will have seen the way Leicester caused a stir at the Emirates on Friday and will be operating a safety-first philosophy.

Therefore, while the United win is a typically short price, we quite like the odds-against quote that the home team get the job done without conceding.

West Ham have made some seemingly astute signings this summer, in particular Marko Arnautovic who arrived from Stoke for big money. However, he and his team-mates are likely to be feeding off scraps and perhaps they will have to wait for their moment in the sun.
