Mexico are odds-on 4/5 favourites with bet365 to overcome Panama in the Gold Cup semi-final and are definitely worth backing after some impressive displays so far during the tournament.

With joint team top-scorers Oribe Peralta and Andres Guardado in the squad, both of whom have netted three goals apiece, the Aztecs have more than enough firepower to overcome their opponents, with Carlos Vela just one behind.

Peralta, who opened the scoring in the 6-0 hammering of Cuba in the group phase, is 5/1 with bet365 to do the same against Panama who narrowly edged past Trinidad in the quarter-finals on penalties.

They also haven’t won in normal time throughout the tournament, advancing to the quarter-finals with three points, as well as recording four consecutive 1-1 draws, which includes the quarter-final as a normal time scoreline.

This will come as good news to Aztecs coach Miguel Herrera, who knows his side don’t struggle for goals. Peralta’s strike partner and Real Sociedad forward Vela, is well worth considering at 9/5 with BetVictor to score in the anytime market, while attacker Giovani Dos Santos has a 6/1 price with the same bookmaker.

The La Galaxy player pulled out of the last game after tweaking his thigh in the warm-up, though he has received a big confidence boost, from Herrera for the semi-final: “We wanted to see how he felt. I told him to warm up as if he was about to go into the game. He did not feel confident and that’s why he went back to the bench,” Herrera said of Dos Santos’ availability.

“If he’s 100 per cent [for the semi-final], there’s no doubt he will go in.”

Taking into account Panama’s lack of goal activity, bet365’s odds-on price of 10/11 for a Mexico clean sheet could be a favourable bet for punters. Each of Mexico’s wins at the tournament in 90 minutes have been by more than one goal and, as such, they are 4/1 with Paddy Power to win by two goals.
