Rank outsider To Be Wild can be safely discounted, but the other five are hard to split. It might come down to stamina, especially on the soft ground, and that is a question mark for both Hawkbill and My Dream Boat, both of whom have shown their best form over 1m2f. The former wasn’t beaten far over this trip in November, but he appeared to find the final stages a bit tough, while My Dream Boat promises to stay given how well he finishes his races and will love the ground, as will Hawkbill. But he needs to prove it.

Sir Michael Stoute runs two, Across The Bay and Midterm, and both stay this far. However, the former may need his first run back after a 276-day layoff, having missed the Craven meeting due to having a temperature, while his stablemate ran a disappointing race on his return to action and is now tried in a visor. Ryan Moore prefers him and probably for good reasons, but I can’t have him at just 3/1.

Given the main protagonists have questions to answer, this might be a good opportunity for Ralph Beckett’s CHEMICAL CHARGE, who was a good winner over this trip at Doncaster two starts back and has run well on soft ground previously. He has a little to find on the ratings, but not much, and arrives here on the back of a narrow second in a Group 3 run over track and trip last month, when he might have won with a more patient ride. He travelled well into the lead 2f out only to wander under pressure and get worried out of it close home, so it’s no surprise that connections are reaching for some headgear this afternoon. I can imagine that Oisin Murphy will be under instructions to hold on to him for a bit longer this afternoon, as he did to perfection on Town Moor, and he must have bright prospects of beating some questionable (albeit high class) stayers. Take Boylesports’ 6/1.
