This afternoon’s maidens at Newbury are well contested by some promising sorts and it will take an above average two-year-old to get over the line in front.

The John Gosden-trained newcomer Jewel House has been priced up as market leader for the opening 7f maiden and the son of Dubawi should go well. He doesn’t have any fancy entries, though (unlike some of the others), and he might be vulnerable to one with some experience under his belt.

That horse might be the Sylvester Kirk-trained SALOUEN, who is having his third start here and has shown plenty of promise so far. He was just touched off on his Salisbury debut when running green and showed the benefit of that run when third in a 6f maiden here on his next start, only losing second close home having overcome a tricky inside draw in stall one.

He should be capable of better still and his trainer was very complimentary about him in a recent Stable Tour. He said: “I think this is a smart colt. He has a lot of strengthening up to do but he shouldn’t have too many problems winning a maiden on that evidence. He should be ready to go again in a couple of weeks and I’m keen to step him up to 7f. He’s a lovely prospect.” Indeed, Kirk made him Trainer’s Pick’ of the entire yard.

Better drawn today in stall seven and with Eddie Greatrex taking a handy 3lb off his back, he looks a value 7/1 shot to take care of market rivals who are perhaps priced up more based on their connections.
