It’s a competitive renewal but the one I keep coming back to is AFAAK and it seems I’m not alone as he’s been backed into clear favouritism. It’s easy to see why as his close second behind impressive Lincoln winner Addeybb in the Silver Cambridgeshire last September is the standout piece of form on offer, and a subsequent 5lb rise shouldn’t stop him as he looks the type to make further improvement this season. We’re having to take his fitness on trust, like several of these, but he has “done great over the winter” according to his trainer Charlie Hills, who gave him a racecourse gallop at Lingfield recently to help blow any cobwebs away. That Jim Crowley has chosen him over the other Hamdan Al Maktoum runner, Taqdeer, who is second favourite in most lists, can be seen as another positive and he can make the most of what looks a good draw in stall 18 (of 25) given they tend to come down the middle here.

It’s just a shame all the fancy prices have gone, but a 7/1 winner is not to be sniffed at and we might beat that on Saturday morning when the price war begins in earnest.

As for potential dangers, I can see Leader Writer being involved at the finish as he ran better than his finishing position of eighth would suggest in the Lincoln last time from a poor draw. The fifth horse home, Repercussion, can also be rated a bit better too as he got bumped around as he fought for room in the final two furlongs. However, the Doncaster race has not been a great guide to this race with just two winners emerging from it in the last decade from 45 runners.

GRAPHITE STORM appeals most of those at bigger prices as he’s performed well on each of his three previous starts at Newbury and while his most recent success came over 7f, he was only just caught close home in a race over the straight Ascot mile last May. He’s 8lb higher now but his trainer Clive Cox said last September that he’s definitely a horse for next year and has gelded him since. At 22/1 with Paddy Power, who are paying out on five places, he’s one for each-way backers, although the headline tip has to be Afaak.
