Welcome to the final day of the Premier League season, where the odds don’t make any sense on first glance!

Newcastle United are without a win in their past ten games. Indeed, they have lost nine of those encounters, with QPR the last team to put them to the sword when winning 2-1 last weekend.

So why are the Magpies a best price 4/5 to win Sunday’s clash at St James’ Park?

It’s partly down to the fact that a victory will guarantee their Premier League safety, with Hull City facing Manchester United in the other Survival Sunday clash and the Tigers are the ones staring down a barrel.

It’s partly down to the fact that Newcastle face a West Ham side who gave up the ghost several weeks ago, with the players knowing that Sam Allardyce is likely to step down as manager after this game.

The Hammers have won just one of their last seven games and the last Premier League away victory occurred on 2 December when the London side enjoyed a 2-1 win at The Hawthorns.

It’s all gone horribly wrong for West Ham since the middle of February when they were beaten 4-0 by West Brom in the FA Cup and that defeat knocked the wind out of the team’s sails.

However, Allardyce will be looking for one final decent performance and the pressure will be on Newcastle as John Carver’s team bid to remain in the top flight depending on what Hull City do against Manchester United.

The Magpies simply can’t be backed at such short odds, with West Ham a better side on paper and they briefly led against Everton last weekend before the Toffees came out on top.

Scoring goals has been a big problem for the Hammers with the absence of Diafra Sakho and Andy Carroll in attack, although the visitors are defensively robust and we’re backing a low-scoring encounter which looks on the cards whatever the result.
