This is a typically wide open renewal but it usually pays to stick with those horses proven this specialist trip of 7f – 2016 hero Golden Steps was the only winner in the last decade without a success over the distance – and given that trainers will target this prestigious handicap in advance, winners don’t tend to be that prolific earlier in the season. Indeed, the last eight winners were all opening their accounts for the campaign and that is a negative for the forecast favourite Gilgamesh, although he looked unlucky not to finish closer than seventh in the Wokingham, having been stopped in his his run, and he was successful over 7f previously.

He looks sure to give a good account but I’ve a strong suspicion that Marcus Tregoning has primed MUKALAL for this and he gets my vote at Hills’ 7/1. He won three times last season and a couple of those came over a mile plus on the all-weather. However, his best performance came over 7f at Ascot on his final outing of 2017, after which his trainer described him as a “huge horse for a three-year-old” with more races in him. He’s since undergone wind surgery and would have needed his first run back in the Royal Hunt Cup over a mile, running like a 33/1 shot to finish midfield and not subjected to a hard race by any means. I would have liked bigger than 8/1 in a race of this nature, but I’ll take that as a sign that he has been training well at home and the booking of Jim Crowley, who is 2-4 on him, is another positive.
