MK Dons and Middlesbrough have accounted for Manchester United in the EFL Cup over the past two seasons, with the Dons having won by an emphatic 4-0 scoreline, while promotion-chasing Boro claimed a goalless draw at Old Trafford before winning the tie on penalties.

Therefore, the Red Devils have been vulnerable against lower-league opposition and the same might apply on Wednesday night when they head to the Sixfields Stadium to face a Northampton side unbeaten at home all season.

Town were only promoted from League Two last season although a 3-1 defeat at Chesterfield on Saturday was the first time they have lost a league match this term.

True enough, the campaign opened with a string of draws for Rob Page’s men although they have more recently beaten MK Dons and Walsall at home, while they also claimed a 2-2 draw against West Brom in the previous round and then won on spot kicks.

Ultimately, the Cobblers have nothing to lose from having a go at their illustrious opponents and Jose Mourinho might end up fielding a weakened team ahead of the weekend clash against Leicester.

That match against the Foxes suddenly becomes important after defeats to Manchester City and Watford, with Mourinho knowing that another loss would already see their title hopes dangling by a string considering how fast a start their city rivals have made.

Juan Mata, Memphis Depay and Daley Blind are likely to make an appearance and it could certainly pay to get with the League One side to make a big impact.
