Sam Allardyce has made it clear what his need to do this weekend. Not lose a game of football. If that happens against Norwich, then the Canaries will go seven points clear having played a game more.

However, keeping the gap to four points is no bad thing for Sunderland considering they have home matches against Arsenal, Chelsea and Everton along with trips to Stoke and Watford.

“We need to go out and win this game but at the end it’s still about not losing it,” said Allardyce of the lunchtime kick‑off. “Norwich will be must-win for us because they are our nearest rivals and we will have to go all out to get the three points.

“If we’re going to beat them we can’t afford to miss the sort of chances we missed last week and Southampton missed [against Leicester] last week.

“When we watched it back it was even more difficult to take. It was a great shame that it was not a very comfortable victory but you have got to take your chances and if you don’t you pay the price in this league.”

Norwich played out an entertaining 3-2 victory over Newcastle in their last home game, although a 1-0 defeat at Selhurst Park swiftly followed and Alex Neil therefore continues to look over his shoulder.

However, a point wouldn’t be a bad outcome for his team who will attempt to tighten things up for what should be a tense encounter.
