Since she fell at the final hurdle in the 2015 renewal, Annie Power has been favourite to make amends and win the OLBG Mares’ Hurdle in 2016, although things have changed in the past few weeks.

Stablemate Faugheen was withdrawn from the Champion Hurdle in February and Arctic Fire was met with the same fate, leaving the door wide open for Annie Power to take her chance in the showcase race on Day One of the Festival.

While Annie Power trades at a best price 2/1 with Paddy Power to finally come good and win at the Festival by scooping the Champion Hurdle, it leaves a wide-open space for another mare to line up later that day.

And that mare is none other than VROUM VROUM MAG, an unbelievably good reserve to Annie Power who has also been entered for the Ryanair Chase and World Hurdle which highlights the regard in which she is held by owner Rich Ricci and trainer Willie Mullins.

However, it appears that Vroum Vroum Mag will now run in the OLGB Mares’ Hurdle, with Mullins recently stating the following during a stable tour:

“She’s stuck to her gender because the races were there, I have no problem with her racing against (male) horses. The programme of races were there and they were nice races. I’d imagine she’ll go to the Mares’ Hurdle.

“To step into the other company (World Hurdle) she has to take on Grade One horses at level weights, or with her fillies’ allowance, and that would be a big jump up.

“If the mares’ hurdle wasn’t there she’d have to do it. The ground at Cheltenham is usually kept safe, which I think is good. It’s a winter game and I think it’s good to have winter ground even when we’re coming to the spring.

“I’ve been taken with how she’s won her races rather than what she’s beaten. I think she’s a very good mare. She doesn’t look it, she looks very ordinary but she has an engine. It was amazing how easily she won at Ascot”.

Why are the bookies offering 5/4 about Vroum Vroum Mag?
Indeed, Paddy Power and William Hill have odds-against quotes about Vroum Vroum with less than a fortnight to go before she runs in the Mares’ Hurdle.

This is because she’s not COMPLETELY certain to run in this race along with the fact that horses can still sustain injuries along the way. VVM’s involvement also depends on Annie Power being spot on for the Champion Hurdle so it’s basically her fitness and her stablemate’s fitness which are both being risked here.

The two bookies above also don’t have Non-Runner No Bet attached to their odds which is why you can enjoy 5/4 about Vroum Vroum with them.

Should you want NRNB insurance about VVM, then bet365 offer 4/5 which is a jump down although we’re potentially talking about a horse likely to go off 4/7 or 8/13 on the day.

Why will Vroum Vroum Mag win?
This season, there has been a couple of facile wins at Clonmel before an outstanding performance at Ascot when she was sent off as 4/6 favourite.

That engine which Mullins talks about could be powering her up the Cheltenham hill to the chorus of loud cheers from the stands.
