David Pipe is another trainer who has his string in rude health and he’s never been slow to spot a winning opportunity. The fact he sends BORDER BREAKER on the 448-mile trip from his Devon base to contest this evening’s Inverness Cup at Perth is a tip in itself then and the six-year-old is a very backable 11/4 to see off his five rivals.

An Irish point winner in 2013 and a dual winning hurdler earlier this year, he went off too hard for his own good in first-time blinkers on his chasing debut over three miles at Worcester in June. To his credit, though, he only weakened on the flat to finish third and the drop back to 2m4f is therefore likely to suit, as should the switch to a right-handed track.

Pipe said on the change of direction: “It looks competitive, but there’s good prize money on offer.” He’ll love the ground and, as he jumped right at Worcester last time, we’re going the other way round. There’s only Perth and Market Rasen racing that way at the moment so we’re going up there to take advantage.”

With the blinkers being replaced with cheek-pieces, a big run is on the cards and the fact he runs in a handicap, rather than another novice chase, suggests that connections think he’s well treated enough on an initial mark of 125. Tom Scudamore rides and I’d expect him to go from the front. Hopefully he can make all.
