Betting Tip: Plymouth @ 3/1 with bet365

Pompey have failed to land automatic promotion from League Two this season, with Paul Cook unable to replicate his success with Chesterfield whom he guided to the Championship two seasons ago.

Cook and his players have a second bite of the cherry in the play-offs, although the bookies really shouldn’t be pricing them up as favourites considering they finished sixth in the table this season.

Plymouth arrive at Fratton Park on Thursday night looking to repeat their 2-1 win from 16 April, with Argyle’s away form having been pretty strong this term, with twelve wins and six draws from twenty-three games on the road.

Warming up with a 5-0 hammering of Hartlepool worked out nicely for Derek Adams’ side who have managed to score in each of their past nine matches and that includes finding the net fourteen times in the previous five encounters.

Portsmouth continue to be erratic, recently losing 3-1 at York before embarking on three straight wins. Then came a 2-1 reverse at home to champions Northampton.

Perhaps the home crowd at Fratton Park will cheer Pompey to a first leg victory although the fact that Plymouth are arguably a better team against a side who often feel stifled at home means that Argyle have to be the bet.
