Achieving the second highest Premier League points total was no mean feat for Chelsea last season, especially with several teams competing to win the title although the Blues were comfortable winners in the end.

Antonio Conte’s side might have been chased home by Tottenham Hotspur although the gap was still seven points and third-placed Manchester City were a further eight points behind, landing on top of a pile that included Liverpool and Arsenal.

There is little reason to suggest Chelsea won’t be the team to beat this time around. Diego Costa is the only player of note who’s likely to leave Stamford Bridge and the London side might have a ready-made replacement in Michy Batshuayi, a player who was little used during the championship-winning season.

Eden Hazard might eventually move to a Spanish club but his mission will surely be to win more silverware in England first, while N’Golo Kante, David Luiz, Marcos Alonso, Thibaut Courtois, Pedro and Cesar Azpilicueta will all remain key players for the champions.

Manchester City are the title favourites as they were last season, with Gabriel Jesus, a fit Vincent Kompany and potentially a decent keeper likely to make them a stronger proposition. However, they have fifteen points to find on Chelsea and there are still defensive issues that need to be addressed.

We’re reluctant to overlook a Tottenham squad who once again acquitted themselves very well this season, although playing at Wembley certainly won’t be anything other than a negative compared to the strong form established at White Hart Lane.

Liverpool have plenty to find in order to challenge for the title and their Champions League obligations will stretch a relatively small squad, while Manchester United finished twenty-four points behind Chelsea this season and Jose Mourinho’s side have goalscoring and match-winning issues to fix.

Arsenal are the other side who could challenge for major honours, although Arsene Wenger’s side have now gone a long time since winning the Premier League title and don’t seem to have the mentality.
