Those hardy North End fans who made the pilgrimage to the Vitality Stadium on Tuesday night were rewarded with an extra-time victory, with Preston claiming a 3-2 win against Bournemouth to book their place in the last sixteen.

Simon Makienok arrived at Deepdale in the summer on a season-long loan and the Dane has had limited game time although a hat-trick against the Cherries means the striker will now be hoping to lead the line against Wigan.

The Latics will hope there is some fatigue still lurking within the home camp after 120 minutes of football on the South Coast, although Gary Caldwell’s team are struggling on the road since landing promotion last season.

There’s a big gulf between the Championship and League One these days, with Wigan having lost all four away matches and they are shipping plenty of goals.

Indeed, it was four defeats on the bounce before a goalless draw against Fulham last weekend and it’s worth noting that PNE served up a 3-0 hammering of Cardiff in their last home game before getting on the wrong end of a 5-0 shoeing at the hands of Brentford.

However, with Makienok showing his prowess and Jordan Hugill getting amongst the goals, we’re happy to back the home side at a reasonable price.
