Plenty of punters will be backing Manchester United to win their Champions League opener at the Philips Stadium, especially after Saturday’s 3-1 win against Liverpool.

However, odds of 6/5 make little to no appeal, especially after news that Wayne Rooney would again be absent from the squad with injury.

It means that Marouane Fellaini is almost certain to start in attack and, while the Belgian is a handful for opposition defenders, he’s not a centre forward who is as predatory as a Sergio Aguero or Diego Costa.

There is also a question mark over Memphis Depay who has had a slow start to life at Old Trafford and Louis van Gaal may opt to keep the winger out of the limelight on his return to a former club.

Anthony Martial’s bright cameo performance against Liverpool suggests he might get the nod, although it’s clear that United will set up defensively again, with Bastian Schweinsteiger and Michael Carrick affording the defence plenty of protection.

Going forward, there are limited choices and PSV will be well up for the game after a great start to their campaign which has seen the Dutch team enjoy three wins and two draws thus far.

Saturday’s 6-0 demolition of Cambuur saw former Newcastle striker Luuk de Jong net a first-half hat-trick and the forward is a different beast from the one who turned out for the Magpies.

PSV won the Eredivisie by seventeen points last season and their home form was staggeringly good, with sixteen wins and just the one defeat.

While United are higher quality opposition to normal, this match does not whisper away win, let alone scream it from the rooftops.

United would settle for a point from this opener and that is what they are likely to get with a mean defence and a modest attacking weaponry.
