A couple of months ago, Reading looked like promotion contenders although the wins have dried up to the extent that the Berkshire team have won just one of their last seven Championship matches.

Steve Clarke hasn’t exactly endeared himself to the Royals faithful by having talks with Fulham over the vacant manager’s position, with the team losing 3-1 at Nottingham Forest on Saturday to slip further off the pace.

Therefore, it doesn’t look like Thursday is the time to be backing them for the win, especially against a QPR team who are keeping things pretty tight under Neil Warnock.

Rangers may not be in a position to challenge for promotion themselves this season although Warnock has gone back to basics and ensured that the team are hard to score against.

There have been slender 1-0 reverses away to Brentford, Derby and Middlesbrough coupled with a goalless draw against Preston and Saturday’s 1-0 win over Leeds United which saw the reliable Charlie Austin score the winner.

Grant Hall has been impressive in the heart of the Ranger defence, with Robert Green remaining one of the best keepers outside of the Premier League and we can be sure that the game plan will be to keep things tight at the Madejski.

Reading have won just four of their nine matches at home and there has been just one clean sheet in the past seven which suggests that Austin can return to the starting line-up and potentially cause some damage.

We’ll certainly side with the visitors on the handicap market considering that a goalless draw is always a runner while Warnock continues to employ defensive tactics that make his team hard to beat.
