Real Madrid can’t beat Atletico this season

Back a low-scoring match at the Vicente Calderon

Real Madrid have faced their city rivals on six occasions this season and failed to land victory. Atletico won a two-legged Super Cup before the season began in earnest, while Diego Simeone’s side have also beaten Los Merengues home and away in the Primera Liga this term.

A Copa del Rey win also suggests that Atletico have the Indian sign over their rivals and we can’t back Real to win this Champions League first leg at the Vicente Calderon on the basis that the European champions have such a lousy head-to-head record.

Real were shaky when squeaking past Schalke in the previous round of the competition, losing 4-3 at home to the German side, although Carlo Ancelotti’s side have steadied the ship recently with a hat-trick of wins against Granada, Rayo Vallecano and Eibar.

Even so, Atletico are eight games unbeaten and the two goals conceded against Malaga on Saturday was the first time that they had conceded in six matches.

We’re expecting this one to be ideal in capitalising from a free bet with it set to be cagey and a low goal count is marginally preferred over a draw between these city rivals for what is a replay of last season’s Champions League final.
