It’s low grade stuff wherever you look today but there are a couple of Redcar runners that might be worth an interest to small stakes.

The class 4 handicap over a few yards shy of a mile has attracted a half decent field and Tom Dascombe’s SHA LA LA LA LEE is one of two last-time-out winners amongst them. The other, Mark Johnston’s Poet’s Prince, is respected as he has been in grand form on the all-weather, winning twice and finishing second in the other, but this looks more competitive than he is used to and he also has a 7lb rise to contend with.

The Dascombe colt on the other hand looks nicely treated on his handicap debut off a mark of 83 when you consider that Masaarr, who finished over two lengths behind him at Wolverhampton last time, is now rated 88 and held a 2000 Guineas entry until recently. The runner-up Honey Man is also well thought of and cost 170,000gns as a two-year-old, so the form has a strong look about it and the winner earned himself extra credit by doing it the hard way from the front.

Having shown promise in a couple of strong maidens at two, the selection has clearly improved again for his winter break and should make up into a decent handicapper this term. Indeed, I will be surprised if he isn’t a good few pounds ahead of his mark and I’m hopeful he can follow up here with the stable form (4-20 in the last fortnight) another positive.
