Wales were the surprise package at Euro 2016, although Chris Coleman’s side haven’t quite left the traps for their latest World Cup qualifying campaign and they can be opposed for Friday night’s encounter.

The Welsh began with a 4-0 triumph over Moldova, although draws against Austria, Georgia and Serbia mean that they sit third in their qualifying group and their limitations have been exposed.

Let’s face it, Wales rode on the crest of a wave to qualify for Euro 2016 and they found some fortune to reach the final four of the tournament, although they remain heavily reliant on Gareth Bale.

On the other hand, you can say that Wales are unbeaten in qualifying thus far and boast a group of experienced defenders including Ashley Williams, James Collins and Chris Gunter.

However, Aaron Ramsey has struggled for form in an Arsenal shirt for most of the season and there is a dearth of attacking quality with the exception of Bale.

Ireland do have marginally better players, with Jonathan Walters getting plenty of game time in a Stoke shirt and Aiden McGeady is looking class again now he’s getting an opportunity in a Preston shirt.

The Republic have kicked on after a 2-2 draw in Serbia, winning three straight qualifying games and a victory here would really put them in a commanding position at the halfway stage of qualifying.
