Let’s start with the draw as it often plays a big part. It used to be the case that a low draw was pretty much essential and the ten-year stats show that eight winners were drawn in stall one or lower. However, in the last two years the winner has raced stands’ side (high numbers) and last season that was certainly the place to be.

That’s a relief in a way as I’m struggling to make much of a case for those drawn in low numbers, other than six-time course winner Pipers Note who has finished fifth and fourth in this race previously. He looks sure to go well again, providing his draw in stall three is not too much of a handicap, but with so many of the fancied runners coming out of double-digit boxes and a potential pace bias on that side of the track to boot, I’ve got to go high.

They include the likely favourite Growl who is one of the class acts and is coming off a fine fourth in the Stewards’ Cup, but I thought the fifth horse in that race, SHANGHAI GLORY, was a shade unlucky and he’s lumbered with the pick. A progressive sprinter last season and a winner on yielding ground at the Curragh on his final start of 2017, he was having just his second run back in the Goodwood race and he did well to finish as close as he did (just three quarters of a length back from Growl) given that he was hampered at a crucial stage.

He will need some luck in this race too, but you can say that about all of them and his trainer Charlie Hills seems very happy with the way he has come out of the Goodwood race. With Jamie Spencer keen to renew the partnership and giving up some potentially nice rides in the south, I’m happy to take Sky Bet’s 8/1.
